MP claims she was drugged and sexually assaulted

Police have launched an investigation following a complaint by Queensland Labor MP Brittany Lauga that she was drugged and sexually assaulted, the Daily Observer has reported. The assistant minister for health said she was attacked on a night out in her Yeppoon constituency. Ms Lauga, 37, went to a police station and then to hospital on April 28. “Tests at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in my body which I did not take,” she said in a statement posted on social media, adding the substance had impacted her “significantly”. “It’s not OK. We should be able to enjoy socialising in our town without the risk of being drugged or assaulted,” she said, adding that she needed time to “physically and emotionally heal”.

Government promises to slash $3 billion off student debt due to the cost-of-living crisis

As Australia grapples with major inflation and cost-of-living pressures, the country’s government has pledged to wipe out $2 billion in student loans, First Post reported. If the measure gets implemented, the Australian government will cut more than three million people’s debt. In a statement released on Sunday, Minister for Education Jason Clare said that the initiative would ease the economic pressure on workers and students. “It will provide significant relief for students while continuing to protect the integrity and value of the HELP and other student loan systems, which have massively expanded tertiary access for more Australians,” Minister Clare said.

PM Albanese vows new funding to help women escape domestic violence

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced new funding on Wednesday to help women escape domestic violence. He also announced a crackdown on misogynistic online content. This was in reaction to an uptick in homicides committed by current and former male partners that he described as a national crisis, ABC News reported. Mr Albanese said his government would invest $925 million over five years to financially support women and children escaping violence. The government also proposed new measures to tackle factors that it says exacerbate violence against women. These factors include violent online pornography and misogynist content targeting children and young people. The measures would include legislation to ban deepfake pornography and more funding for an Australian regulator to pilot age-assurance technologies to protect children from harmful online content.

Police shoot dead armed teen after stabbing attack

Police shot dead a teenage boy after he stabbed and injured a man in an attack that had the “hallmarks” of terror in Perth, CNN reported. The teenager, described as a 16-year-old Caucasian male, was armed with a knife when he attacked in a suburb of Perth, Western Australia (WA) Premier Roger Cook said. WA police commissioner Col Blanch said. Local police received a call from a male indicating that “he was going to commit acts of violence.” When the officers arrived at the scene, they were confronted by the teen, who was alone and holding a large kitchen knife. The officers ordered him to put down the knife, but the suspect refused, rushing the police. An officer fired a single shot and fatally wounded the male.
