I feel so heartbroken when I see what is happening to this generation of young people in the Northern Territory.
We are going to lose them. The big question these kids keep asking themselves is “Why should we care when nobody else does?”.
I don’t have all the answers, but a great place to start is EQUALITY.
Have you ever been into a remote community house?
Aboriginal people weren’t consulted on the design. A non Aboriginal person would not put their dog in there.
So, how about we start there?
I can describe countless incidents of racism that I have witnessed against Aboriginal people and I call it out. Trouble is, racist people pick on everyone – wouldn’t matter if you were the Pope, if you’re Black you will still not be good enough for a racist.
So, considering these kids are dealing with the worst shit in the world, how do you want them to act? Who can they talk to? Who knows how to help these kids channel their rage and despair?
That’s when things will settle down.
Material things can be replaced but this generation can’t be.
All the piss take of thanking the elders past, present and future, they’re useless. Let them have all the grog they want in their communities, but they have to stay in the communities. Start billing the land councils for all damages, medical and police time caused by these wretches when they cause trouble in towns.
