Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong will this week welcome the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, the Rt Hon Lord Cameron and Secretary of State for Defence, the Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP to Australia for the annual Australia-United Kingdom Ministerial Consultations (AUKMIN), Mirage News reported. Australia and the United Kingdom will discuss ways to deepen cooperation across defence, climate action and clean energy, cyber, and economic security.

RBA holds policy rates at 4.35 per cent
RTT News has reported that the Reserve Bank of Australia decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.35 per cent for the third straight meeting. The RBA board also retained the interest rate paid on exchange settlement balances at 4.25 per cent. Recent official data showed that the country’s consumer price inflation was steady at 3.4 per cent in January, suggesting that price growth continues to moderate, in line with the RBA’s latest forecasts. The central estimates are for inflation to return to the target range of 2-3 per cent in 2025 and the midpoint in 2026.

Power prices are planned to go down in July
Energy Regulator Chairperson Clare Savage says the plans for power prices to fall in July will be “welcome news” for many customers in certain states of Australia, Sky News reports. The Australian Energy Regular announced that most households could see electricity price reductions of 0.4 to 7.1 per cent from July 1. “I’m sure it will be welcome news for many customers in southeast Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. It’s great to see that we’re finally getting some reductions in power prices,” she told Sky News.

Grainne Brunsdon is new Screen Australia COO
Grainne Brunsdon has been promoted to chief operating officer within federal funding and policy body Screen Australia, Variety reports. Ms Brunsdon was the organisation’s director of content, where she led production investment and development, distribution support, and business initiatives for the last two years. Brunsdon has more than 25 years of experience in the entertainment sector. Before joining Screen Australia in 2022, she was head of Screen NSW.
